I agree...

Generic, that was below the belt and offensive. Maybe if you took your head out of your pretentious 'gate' you'd do yourself a favour.

I hate posting stuff like this... but I had too in this case.

I'm not offended by what Generic said. I found it quite amusing. I'm more offended by the Justin Timberlake jabb, come on what's wrong with a bit of Justin man.

Nigel has a point that the fiscal pressure of getting a shot write is something your learn with film, and makes you a better film-maker.

anyhow I shoot DV cause its cheap.

The point is, obviously, that you are unlikeley to impress anyone filming your mates in a fun amateur video, with your favourite record for a soundtrack. (Be that Justin Timberlake or whatever.)

Its a hard life, welcome to it.

If you want to impress people (enough to stump up some cash for your next project) then you have to do something very special.
For some that means shooting it all on film.
If you think that is a pretentious attitude then I expect you will spend the rest of your life making zombie movies on video - nothing wrong with that, its just a matter of how big you can think.

Its really just a matter of ambition and aspiration, not a matter of pretention.

I think that was the point being made (kind of obviously).

8000 is a shitload of money man. For my dream project I need something between 500 and 800 euros. I'll probably be asking my university for 3ccd(hopefully) cameras with some sound equipment. Lights and stuff... maybe I'll just get them from me and my friends houses and put white lights in them if they're yellow.

I'd definetely go for the Apple/FCP4 thing. Does anyone know how much this will cost? I hate waiting behind the trucks for them to fall off.

If you've got 8000 to spend and you want to start a production company with your friends then buying a nice camera would be a good choice. And you also need money to spend on good actors, hiring sets etc.

I was being sarcastic about Justin Timberlake. nothing against you people who do like him though (god there are some very sensitive people on this board)

To have stuff on your showreel that's shot film will impress. It'll show confidence and competence, aslong as your subject matter isn't a couple of mates falling over in your garden.

cr@p in cr@p out no matter what you shoot it on. Silk purses and pig's ears,

I think with $8000 you should go travelling to India for a couple of years and loose yourself.

emjen try www.apple.com for a price

I like DV cause most porn movies are shot on it.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Lol. Why do you little punks argue about this crap all day long? I agree film is a much more impressive format but thats no reason to ignore DV. I think Nigel makes a valid piont that film is great for learning on becos it forces you to do things properly, but heres a novel idea... how about someone with DV forcing themself to stick to the plan?

There seems to be this attitude amongst film users that if you shoot DV you somehow just shoot crap and take little care in it. While theres probably some truth in that as i would be even more anal than usual before filming every shot if it was costing me shit loads i think its more the fact that DV makes film making easier so 99% of the people that use it are doing so becos they want to try playing at making movies, not actually becos they have any talent and will make it anywhere. I dont see why you cant shoot DV and use it for its advantages, the fact its cheap, easier to work with... but then stick to shooting plans, and "force" yourself to do things properly.

Blaming the format for the short comings of the director who uses it is retarded! If i shot something shit on DV its cos im a shit film making not becos anyone who touches DV suddenly ignores how to make good movies.

The reason film is distorted in our opinions is that it costs to much that only the guys who know they can make good movies bother with it. So its like wow look how shit DV movies are compaired to our film ones... nah its just that 99% of people who shoot movies on DV are doing so cos they watched Pulp Fiction and wanted to film a gangster movie with thier dads camcorder.

The more i think about this film being better than DV argument the more fucking retarded it sounds... heres a quick list of the things that make a movie good (in no order)...

Acting performances
Blocking
Plot
Pacing
Production Values
Cinematography
Sound
Editing

How many of these does film give any advantage? One... the cinematography one. Does it make youre blocking or your directing of the actors any better or indeed any of the other skills associated with directing or otherwise?? No...

So basicly, film will make your movie look more pretty, but unless your a cinematographer big woop? Im guessing most of us here want to direct... flm isnt going to help you do any of the directing skills anymore than DV can.

So basicly to conclude my ranting... shoot on whatever you want, but bare in mind it is you who makes the movie good or not. If you shoot a bad Zombie music set to Slipknot Mp3s its becos you are a trashy shit film making not becos the DV format made you do it! While im sure we would all prefere watching a beautiful movie shot on film at the end of the day unless you want to be a DP for a living it doesnt matter which format you shoot on... just go out there and shoot as much as possible... but bare in mind its attention to detail and good planning which makes a movie enjoyable. Whether its DV or otherwise make sure you "force" yourself into getting the best possible results at anything you do...

you guys are soooooo literal....
Im not ignoring DV. Far from it. horses for courses.

Anyway, I guess this post would inevitably end up as a Film vs DV arguement.

But I think you brought up an interesting point BM.
-

The very fact that film ONLY improves the picture quality suggests itself that the director is confident and competant enough to be judged on the other aspects, rather than simply getting a pat on the back for having finished his project (on anything at all).
The movie will simply be taken more seriously full stop.
Another aspect to take into account is getting actors/crew walking out on you simply because you have a diddy home DV camera on a tripod rather than a semi pro camera.....
but blah blah blah - this hardly helps the initial poster with his question.

Id agree with Jungle guy, and spend the 8 grand on a few years in Asia, and get some life experience.

Oh man.

Im not anti DV. I own a fucking xm2. DV is great. Theres lots of nice stuff made with DV. Its no match for film visually, but there ya go.

My last post was so extreme I didnt think anyone would take it literally. And yet they have. The mind truly boggles. Tongue in cheek anyone? Anyone?

BM made some good points, but with respect they've all been made before.

I simply said if you want investors, I'd be more confident showing them something on film. You can't argue with that.

Nobody can be called pretentious for shooting or wanting to shoot film. Film is a suberb medium and anyone whos serious has to go there at some point.

My bet is that ANYONE who comes on here slagging film has never used it.

I dont know whether to laugh or cry on here.

well i agree with you whole heartedly using film is best for a professional job with investors. But i get the impression this guy isnt at that stage becos if he was doing it professionaly with investors he wouldnt be asking us lot the best way to spend 8k he would be talking to his crew about what they need to rent/buy.

Maybe he does just need to bite the bullet and shoot some films on film. Even if they suck he might make some headway one way or another. But it sounds to me like he just wants to get a killer rig to be able to film stuff how and when he wants
